Description
A rare Italian religious painting from the first half of the seventeenth century. An oil on panel depicting the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, difficult to obtain. At the center of the composition we find the first Christian martyr, wearing the traditional red dalmatic of a deacon, as he is being stoned.
Around him we see his tormentors intent on hurling large stones. Above the Saint, a celestial vision—a glory of clouds with God the Father and Christ ready to receive the saint's soul. A painting of notable artistic quality, with warm color harmonies, carefully studied drapery, and the drama of the gestures recalling the Lombard late-Mannerist school.
20th-century wooden, carved and gilded frame, with some signs of wear. The painting has already been restored with some color retouching in places, overall in good preservational condition. Painted Light H 104 x W 82 cm.
