Description
Offered is a painting by the Dutch painter Willem Johannes Burksen, Amsterdam 1857-1935.
The painting shows the Montelbaan Tower on the Oude Schans in Amsterdam. For the origin and history of the Montelbaan Tower, see Wikipedia.
Burksen mainly trained himself, also taking lessons from his father, Willem Hendrik Burksen, painter, Amsterdam 1822-1891 Heerlen. The father was also a carriage and glass painter, noted in the RKD – Dutch Institute for Art History – and in the lexicons Scheen 1969/70; 1981.
Willem Johannes was also a diamond cutter and house painter, and given his striking paintings of Amsterdam cityscapes, painted with an eye for detail, can certainly be considered among the better painters.
Size of the canvas: 30 x 40 cm, frame 40 x 50 cm. The frame is from that period and has gradually become a bit warped over the years.
