This valuable work, depicting a view of the lagoon with sailing boats on the calm sea off Venice, unquestionably belongs to the talented Triestine painter Giuseppe Pogna (Trieste, 1845 – 1907), an Italian artist mainly dedicated to marine landscapes and lagoon views.
The scene features some fishing boats in the Venetian lagoon, recognizable by their distinctive orange sails that stand out against the calm sea and a sky veiled with clouds. The composition shows numerous vessels in the distance and a larger one in the foreground, with figures on board: in the center, a boat loaded with baskets, equipped with two sails and animated by fishermen. On the left, a long line of sail-powered barges develops, some fitted with fishing nets, lined up almost one after the other to the horizon. In the background, on the right, the silhouette of Venice emerges. The entire depiction is created with a subdued color palette and a quick, loose brushwork.
He initially trained as a self-taught artist, then briefly attended the Venice Academy, where he was awarded in 1870. In Trieste, he was a member of the Artistic Circle and shared a studio with A. Lonza. He was among the first Trieste artists to revive the tradition of maritime painting in a naturalist style, but with a subtle poetic vein (Miramare Castle, Arsenal of Punta Olivi near Pola, Trieste, Miramare Castle; Fishing boats in the Gulf, private collection). One of his rare portraits from 1893 is that of Giuseppe Garibaldi (Trieste, Risorgimento Museum), notable for its expressive intensity. He participated in the Trieste exhibitions of 1890 (Landscape), 1903 (Windstorm), and 1904 (Marina).
He mainly focused on landscapes, particularly marine scenes, rendered with intense naturalism and widespread lyricism. Recurring in his work are lagoon or maritime views, similar to this one, animated by small fishing boats whose orange sails stand out against the blue-green background of sea and sky, while the coastal profiles emerge faintly in the distance.
Regarding the state of preservation, the painted surface shows a patina varnish. Additionally, under raking sunlight, the characteristics of the applied color and the brushwork's flow are visible. The canvas measures 54 x 88.5 cm. The painting is enhanced by a beautiful gilded and ornate frame (the frame measures approximately 70 x 104 x 5 cm). The frame shown in the photos above was added to the artwork by the seller or a third party. The frame is provided at no additional cost so that it is ready for display upon arrival. The frame is included as a courtesy and is not considered an integral part of the artwork. Therefore, any potential damage to the frame that does not affect the artwork itself will not be accepted as a valid reason to open a claim or request order cancellation.
