It was in Bouville, on June 12, 1878, that Narcisse Guilbert was born. The young Narcisse enrolled at 17 at the Rouen School of Fine Arts, then at Joseph Delattre's Free Academy. He would frequently return to paint on the very places where Delattre had taken him. In 1910, he stayed in Brittany, made a few forays to Paris, and it is on the Norman beaches, particularly Étretat, that he would paint his finest seascapes around 1920. In 1920, at Rue Marbœuf, there took place the only exhibition held in Paris before the one organized in 1969 by Galerie Watteau. Guilbert is undoubtedly one of Rouen’s most gifted landscape painters, noted for his keen sense of light, the beauty of his color range, and his great sensitivity.
