Description
Oil on canvas attributed to the Piedmontese School (17th century). Portrait of a cardinal, presumably Prince Maurice of Savoy (1593-1657). Sold by Christie’s, New York, previously Anderson Galleries and Enrich Gallery, NY. Relatively good condition but needs restoration. At the top there is a period-appropriate addition of 7 cm. Without a frame.
The painting was sold by Christie's in 2011 on behalf of the Hispanic Society of America (N.Y.).
The identification of the portrait’s subject as Maurice of Savoy, according to Christie’s experts, is based on a positive comparison with the portraits of the House of Savoy by the Flemish painter Jan Kraeck, known in Italy as Giovanni Caracca, kept in the Pinacoteca of Turin.
