Description
Follower of Guido Reni (1575-1642), Lucretia Romana, oil on canvas, 50 x 59.5 cm, dimensions including the frame 60.5 x 70.5 cm.
The painting in question is a very high-quality study probably attributable to an Italian master of the 18th century. The model is Guido Reni's Lucretia Romana, a subject the Bolognese master rendered in two main iconographies. This is known from an autograph exemplar belonging to the collections of the Italian Senate (Quadreria of Palazzo Giustiniani, Rome).
The work was offered at auction at Bertolami Fine Arts, Rome in 2015 (auction no. 20, 17-18 December, catalogue by T. Strinati) with attribution to Guido Reni and workshop and starting bid €8,000 (lot no. 61, page 55). For this listing it is preferred to present it simply as a follower of Guido Reni.
The conservation state is excellent. Notable is the presence of natural aging craquelure, as visible in the photograph. The work has been reframed and the original frame has been replaced.
