This postcard captures a vibrant view of Calle de Cortes—known today as Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes—one of the grandest boulevards in Barcelona.
Gran Via, formerly referred to as Calle de Cortes, was laid out in the mid-19th century as part of the ambitious Ildefons Cerdà plan that transformed Barcelona into a modern city.
Barcelona was, by this period, becoming a hub of Catalan modernisme (Art Nouveau), and avenues like Gran Via played host to ornate architecture, grand hotels, and cosmopolitan culture. The presence of the electric tram shown in the postcard reflects Barcelona’s early adoption of electrified public transport, introduced in 1899.
The reverse is printed in red ink with the “Tarjeta Postal – Unión Postal Universal – España” format and includes a brief Spanish description of the location.
