This postcard shows the ornate pavilion at the Georg Victor Spring (Georg Victor-Quelle) in Bad Wildungen, a historic spa town in the German state of Hesse.
Named after Prince Georg Victor of Waldeck and Pyrmont, the Georg Victor Spring was one of the most prominent of Bad Wildungen’s many mineral sources. The town rose to fame in the 19th and early 20th centuries as a fashionable spa destination for Europe’s elite, including royalty and artists. With its clean mountain air, therapeutic mineral springs, and landscaped promenades, Bad Wildungen became a symbol of health, leisure, and modern science.
Spa architecture flourished during this period, with elegant pavilions, pump rooms, and bathhouses built to host thousands of annual visitors. The Georg Victor-Quelle was particularly praised for its iron- and carbon-rich waters, believed to aid digestion and strengthen the body. Guests would visit in spring or summer to “take the cure,” often staying for weeks or months as part of a seasonal health regime.
